Za • ma (zɑːmə ˈzɑːmə) | verb/noun – to try, to attempt; one that endeavors
The word Zama, in both Zulu and Xhosa, translates loosely to “to endeavor,” “to attempt,” or “to try.” It’s a simple yet profound term that resonates deeply with me. Beyond its linguistic beauty, the word encapsulates the perseverance I’ve needed throughout my life.

The History
In elementary school, I spent countless afternoons in an after-school program, where we socialized, snacked, completed homework, and occasionally rehearsed songs for holiday and spring performances. These rehearsals were compulsory, often feeling like child labor, though I look back with a mix of humor and fondness. One year, we learned a song in Zulu. I’ve long forgotten the lyrics, but that experience sparked something deeper in me—a desire to learn the language and reconnect with my ancestral roots. I am an unabashed nerd with special interests in linguistics and etymology—a intriguing fascination inherited from my father, the one to tape our home copy of the film “Shaka Zulu”.
Why ZAMA?
Though I’m not particularly adept at acquiring new tongues, I nevertheless try to learn much of other languages and cultures, including X’hosa and Zulu, two languages of South Africa. Deeper than academics it felt personal. It was a path of expressing my Afro-descended identity beyond the limited African American history taught in my youth. The circlet of hair around my locs pays homage the umqhele, the traditional headband worn by South African warriors. I am not South African, but the little connections to my ancestral homeland planted in an after school program choir resonates in my art today.
Wisdom from Many
To me, creativity is not siloed. My college experiments, samples of which I’ve included here, to my work in education, caregiving, and community engagement informs my media artistry—just as much as my experience in photography, videography, and consulting. These intersecting modalities converge into a singular vision, driven by my commitment to justice and authenticity in every endeavor. As Zama the Creative, I endeavor to be.
What This Is • What This Isn’t
ZAMA Creative is all about the solo projects. represents the creative wing of my work. All of these projects whether they are personally sourced or commercially published, they are the projects that matter because they matter to me. I separate them thusly from the body of work for Upbound Media Group LLC, my media company. These few gems are samples from my college years, endeavoring to try something new. Not corporate. Something Creative.
